A Letter from the President of the Arab American Institute to the NADP
On behalf of the Arab American Institute, I would like
to thank you for your thoughtful words of comfort in this difficult time. I
first want to share with you the statement we issued on September 11. Americans
of Arab origin are united in their solidarity with all Americans as our nation
grieves, rebuilds and seeks justice. We know that some will vent their anger
and outrage on innocents here at home. We are encouraged by the quick response
of many elected officials, law enforcement agencies, religious leaders and public
figures who are speaking out against scapegoating. In fact, for every hate message
sent, we receive ten which send a message of hope and concern. We are proud
that Arab Americans are a part of the healing process. From prayer vigils and
blood drives organized by community leaders to the quiet acts of ordinary citizens,
we are deeply involved in the national recovery. We are also working hand in
hand with civic and political leaders to make sure our country's reaction is
guided by principles that safeguard our civil liberties. The days and weeks
ahead will continue to be a test for our country. The words and actions of people
of good will and courage, like the heroism of those leading the rescue/recovery
effort, will continue to represent the best of our national character.
Thank you again for your words of support. If you would like to learn more
about our work you may visit us at www.aaiusa.org. Also, please see the section dedicated to this crisis that we have created on our website at http://www.aaiusa.org/Tragedy/index.html.
Best regards,
James J. Zogby
